AFL5000 Bi-Directional L Band over Fibre System

The AFL5000 L Band over Fibre System consists of a two fibre-optic modems and the interconnecting fibre-optic cable on a compact cable reel. The system is used to remote SNG baseband equipment away from the RF / Antenna terminal when large separations are required e.g. tall buildings or areas where it is not safe to have personnel adjacent to the uplink terminal.

Traditionally these separations have been achieved using L band coaxial cable but this has practical limits of around 100m due to cable losses and cable bulk. The fibre-optic cable between the two AFL5000 units can be several km long and a 1km fibre-optic cable can be wound onto a cable drum of only 38cm diameter.

The AFL5000T is situated at the baseband equipment end of the link. This takes in the TX L band signal, HPA control data and if using an Advent motorised antenna will also take in ethernet web browser control cable which will be used to remotely control a ACU5000 Antenna Controller. The X-Site Fibre cable is terminated in LEMO fibre connectors which then provides a 4-way fibre breakout to connect to the rear of the AFL5000T. The RX L Band from the remote terminal appears at the RX L Band connector on the rear of the unit.

The AFL5000R is situated with the Antenna Terminal along with the ACU5000 Antenna Controller. The AFL5000R is connected to the X-Site Fibre in the same manner as the AFL5000T. The TX L band is routed to a co-sited HPA or BUC along with the HPA Control Data. The Ethernet connection is routed to the M&C connector of the ACU5000 enabling remote control of the ACU from the web broser connection of the AFL5000T. The ACU5000 is used to supply LNB voltage and voltage switching if required under web browser control.

A typical system connection diagram is shown on the datasheet.
